“When we fully experience the world and all the wonders it has to offer, we connect with who we are and discover who we can be.”
I discovered this quote on the inside of my itinerary-holder from STA Travel, and thought it perfectly reflected what I am going to get out of this next adventure. I posted recently that yes, I was finally going on a holiday, and now I can share that my trip has been planned, paid for, and I am now in the countdown stage – 3 weeks and 5 days if you were wondering.
But I need your help. I have a spare day or two in a few places and I would love your suggestions on what to do and where to go. Please place any thoughts in the comments below/ email (hayleyonholiday at gmail dot com) or contact me on Facebook or Twitter.
Bali
I bid Brisbane farewell on Friday 24th May, when I fly to Darwin, meet my parents in the international terminal and fly onwards with them to Bali. I am so excited to visit my beautiful island once more and see my friends; get a massage a day; watch the sunset and eat some glorious mee goreng. We will stay in Legian until Wednesday when we move onto Nusa Lembongan for 4 nights. I have never been to this island so I am looking forward to visiting a different part of Bali
Tokyo
Yes, you read that right. I will leave Bali early Monday morning on the 3rd June (saying a tearful goodbye to my parents in the process) and fly onwards to Tokyo. I have to admit that Tokyo was never on my initial list of places I wanted to visit. However, when I visited my travel agent it made sense to fly to a major Asian base then onwards to America. But I am very excited to spend four nights in the city and soak up as much of the madness as I can. I am spending half a day on a walking tour and another full day visiting Mount Fuji and Hakone National Park, which leaves me quite a bit of spare time to do what I want, which is where you come in – how would you spend a day in Tokyo?
Honolulu
Woohoo! I have wanted to visit Hawaii for a long time. Being from Tropical Australia, I think I will fit in nicely with the chilled vibe of the island. I only have three nights in Honololu, but I am going to make the most of my time there by doing a full day island tour, to take in as much as possible, which leaves me some extra time – suggestions? I think lying on the beach trying to make myself less-pale will have to factor in there as well.
Los Angeles
La-la land. I am just a wee bit pumped to finally make it to LA. I am spending four nights in the celebrity-soaked city and I plan to do as much as possible in this time, including a tour of the Warner Bros Studios (and “Stars Homes” for some celebrity stalking) and I will also do a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour for a day, which I think is the best way to see as much of a big city in little time. In my spare day I am thinking shopping (bargain shopping) and checking out Venice Beach.
San Francisco
I have never heard a bad thing about San Fran so I am keen to check out this much-loved city over four nights as well. I will be spending a day on a tour that includes Alcatraz and many different bus tours of the city during the day and night. Then I will be rising early to go on a full day tour out to Yosemite National Park. Growing up with my dad, it is impossible not to grow fond of all different types of nature. I am interested to see the difference in flora and fauna between Australian and American national parks (I know, I’m a nerd). If you had a spare day in San Francisco, how would you spend it?
Vancouver
I will arrive into my final destination, Vancouver, on 18th June. I luckily have some family friends who will take me under their wing for my first few days in the city – showing me the sites and getting me organised for Canadian working life. Then I have to find a job, a place to live…and some friends. Should be easy right?
So that is it – my epic summer adventure. I know I will be a nervous wreck prior to leaving Australia, and then my parents in Bali, but I know, as clichéd as it sounds, that I am going to have the experience of my lifetime in Canada. And home is only a very long and expensive flight away.
Remember, I am welcome to all thoughts, ideas and opinions!
