Now I know that while you are in Luang Prabang you will be having a great time and won’t want to leave. But tear yourself away from the markets because just an hour outside of town is the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfalls. Because they are a little bit popular you can access them via tuk tuk, songthaeaw or mini bus.
Kuang Si Waterfalls
The locals have done a great job developing the Kuang Si Waterfalls into a tourist attraction. There are stalls outside for people to pick up local treats, like frozen fruits and fruit juices. The walking trails to the biggest fall seemed to be well maintained and looked after too. There are also swings from trees for the adventurous travellers to use and some cute Asian black bears in enclosures that have been rescued from poachers. It is not everyday you can see a bear and go for a refreshing swim in the same place.
What makes them so special is the limestone rocks the water cascades over turns the water an incredible light turquoise colour. It was like the oceans you imagine in the Caribbean, except you are in Laos. There are many pools to choose from, but one is off limits as a sacred site. The water is quite cool and soaking in there is the perfect way to unwind after a day in the hot Asian sun. Trust me.
Kuang Si Waterfalls can be visited for a morning, afternoon or day trip from Luang Prabang in Laos. There are tables and chairs for you to even have a picnic beside the pool if that interests you. But I recommend everyone that visits the beautiful Laos town to take time out to see the waterfalls. They are a perfect escape.
