This monthly memo is to inspire myself and other Melbourne residents to get out, explore and perhaps experience something different each month in this beautiful city we call home.
Yes Melburnians, there is more to do in October than watch the AFL Grand Final this weekend (or the NRL Grand Final in my case). Here are more activities to enjoy this month as it warms up down south.
When & Where: 2 to 4 October at The Royal Exhibition Building
Visit: The Finders Keepers
I have visited these markets previously in, but probably won’t make it there this weekend. Fortunately the arts and crafts extravaganza happens a few times a year. I recommend checking them out for great gifts and maybe a personal treat.
South East Asia Festival
When & Where: 3 and 4 October at Argyle Square on Lygon Street, Carlton
Visit: Around You for more information
If you love Asian food, then this is the event for you. The festival features a lot of different food from many different local restaurants. The official website says the countries celebrated include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
When & Where: 8 to 25 October at various locations
Visit: Melbourne Festival
There are so many events happening for Melbourne Festival. I didn’t even know about it until someone dropped off some books to my work, but now I am excited. Definitely check out the website as there is a lot of things happening: music performances, theatre shows, art openings and more. It seems tickets sell fast though, so don’t hesitate.
Round She Goes Fashion Market
When & Where: 11 October at Coburg Town Hall (90 Bell Street)
Visit: Round She Goes
We all know how much I love a. Plus this one is fashion-based = bonus!
Malaysian Street Festival
When & Where: 11 October at Queen Victoria Market
Well, if you miss out on the South East Asian Festival, than you can get your fix here instead. Or go to both, cos why not?
Oktoberfest in the Gardens
When & Where: 23 and 24 October at Birrarung Marr Park
Visit: Oktoberfest in the Gardens
I featured an Oktoberfest celebration last month, but this one is Australia’s biggest and best (so the website states). It holds events in Perth and Sydney too. It seems there are only tickets left for Friday’s celebration so get in fast.
Cake, Bake and Sweets
When & Where: 23 to 25 October at Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre
Visit: Cake, Bake and Sweets
This event makes me hungry just thinking about it. It is devoted to the world of baking and the art of cake decorating. There are celebrity demonstrations, classes and interactive workshops.
I know Halloween isn’t celebrated a lot in Australia, but Melbourne has some events going on.
Fright Night at Metropole Bar in St Kilda.
Spooktober at various locations. Haunted Houses scare the bejeebers out of me, but I’ll try anything once.
at Luna Park. If you dress up with a friend, one of you get in for free!
That’s a wrap on Melbourne events in October 2015. What are you excited about doing this month?
