I know it is a rite of passage for backpackers to head to the Full Moon party in Thailand. But you can still have some fun Full Moon-style in Australia. Seriously. Base Backpackers on Magnetic Island, a 20 minute ferry ride from my hometown of Townsville in north Queensland, hosts monthly.
The biggest party of the year is on New Years Eve. Seriously, people come from across Australia to celebrate the New Year here. I haven’t been yet, but my first Full Mooner was in June last year. My mates and I hit up the bars in Townsville first before heading over on a 9pm ferry. One of the best parts about the parties is that ferries run all night, so you don’t need to spend unnecessary money on accommodation on the island.
Back to the story. Once you get off the ferry on Maggie, there will be a bus waiting to take you to the party, which isn’t very far away. Then it begins. You can still drink from buckets like they do in Thailand, they are just going to cost you a bit more money. And you can still party on the beach, or on the deck, which is where the DJs are at. The Full Moon Parties attract some of the biggest DJ acts of Australia and the world. They are that good. When you have finished you can just hop straight on the ferry and head back to Townsville, or spend the night. It is entirely up to you.
So if you ever make your way this far north on an Aussie trip, make sure you check out a Magnetic Island Full Moon Party. You won’t be disappointed – promise!
