When I visited many of America’s southern states in 2014, I was amazed that the people were as friendly and hospitable as they’re portrayed in so many movies and TV shows. As I travelled from North Carolina to Georgia to Alabama, I thoroughly enjoyed my Deep South trip. If you decide to go on your own Southern adventure, at least one of these five cities should make the itinerary.
WHERE TO VISIT IN AMERICA’S SOUTH
Thanks to its proximity to many amusement parks, Kissimmee is a great place to visit in Florida. From Kissimmee you can easily explore Walt Disney World Resort, Gatorland, Old Town, Universal Studios and Legoland Florida. For a resort with different accommodation options, choose Tropical Palms Resort. Guests can park their RV, pitch a tent in the campground or stay in one of the resort’s cottages. Its facilities include mini-golf, sports courts, a pool and an onsite café.
GULF SHORES, ALABAMA
A popular vacation spot in Alabama, Gulf Shores consists of miles of white sand beaches and clear waters. Some of the best adventures in town include water sports, zip lining, playing golf on a championship course and visiting Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. For a family friendly stay on the water, check out Lighthouse Resort. The hotel has both an indoor and outdoor pool, a private beach, a beachfront fitness centre and guests can choose from one, two and three bedroom suites.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA
Fort Lauderdale is located on Florida’s southeastern coast and is famous for its 23 miles of glorious beaches and boating canals. The Strip is a popular place to visit that runs along the beachfront. It’s where visitors will find plenty of outdoor restaurants, hip bars and boutiques. For a luxurious stay, the Royal Beach Palace will tick many boxes. Many rooms have ocean views and the beautiful heated outdoor pool has its own Tiki Bar.
Although it may be known for being the home of the Masters Golf Tournament, Augusta has more to share with visitors than its golf course. Augusta straddles the Georgia and South Carolina border, has a canal running through its town and has many museums for visitors to enjoy. If you want to be close to all the action, the local Country Inn & Suites is a great option. This hotel chain is known for its Southern hospitality and you will feel instantly welcomed when you walk through the door.
Known as the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg is definitely a great escape for adventure travellers. Two of the top attractions in the city include the Space Needle and Ober Gatlinburg. The latter is an amusement park and ski slope, with an aerial tramway that offers excellent panoramic views. A great accommodation option close to all the sights is Sidney James Mountain Lodge, with its two pools, fitness centre, onsite restaurant and picnic area.
America’s Deep South is a beautiful part of the country, with friendly locals and beautiful scenery eagerly awaiting your arrival.
