Before I visited New York City, I didn’t realise just how close New Jersey was. Like across the river close. So if you’re looking to visit the city that never sleeps (and who isn’t), it’s worthwhile checking out accommodation options in neighbouring New Jersey. You will be able to save money and explore another state as well. Here are five places in New Jersey you can choose for your next city break.
Where to stay in New Jersey
Wildwood
New Jersey is known for its summer vacation hotspots and Wildwood is one of them. Morey’s Piers is definitely a highlight, which is an old-fashioned boardwalk that includes amusement rides. Everyone will love a day out at either the Raging Waters Waterpark or the Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club. At night, chill out at one of the most unique hotels in Wildwood: Caribbean Motel. The hotel is 1950s-inspired and has a Palm Springs desert theme; complete with an outdoor pool.
Jersey City
This is the city opposite Lower Manhattan on the Hudson River. It’s home to the historic Ellis Island, as well as Liberty State Park. From here you can get excellent views of the Statue of Liberty, see several interesting monuments and enjoy recreational activities. For families, a visit to Jersey City isn’t complete without seeing the Liberty Science Center either. Fortunately, you will find many cheap hotels in Jersey City, and you are just a subway ride from the Big Apple.
North Bergen
Located north of Jersey City and opposite New York City’s Upper East Side, North Bergen is a quick bus ride away from Manhattan. A great place to base yourself for New York City exploring, there are many great and cheap hotels in North Bergen to choose from. A recommendation is the Meadowlands View Hotel, which has rooms starting from $107 per night. The hotel also has a convenient shuttle that takes you to and from Times Square for a day of sightseeing. Alternatively, public buses will have you there in a flash.
Galloway
Although its neighbours, Atlantic City and Ocean City get a lot of attention, Galloway does have a few attractions for visitors. The township’s biggest drawcard is the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club. It is definitely the best hotel in Galloway. The resort includes two pools, two golf courses, tennis courts and a health club with spa and steam room. There is also a restaurant, lounge and poolside bar on-site, plus the prestigious Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa.
Secaucus
Secaucus is located between Jersey City and North Bergen, which means it’s in a very prime location. It also means you will find many bargain hotels in Secaucus, too. Check out Candlewood Suites Secaucus, with its 24-hour fitness centre, complimentary Wi-Fi and convenient kitchenettes in every room. It will be a perfect place to rest after pounding the NYC pavement.
As a budget traveller, I am now definitely contemplating staying in New Jersey the next time I visit New York City. I am always looking to cross more states off my American bucket list.
