Here are my recommendations for the 13 best Legian restaurants, bars and cafes to visit in 2020.

I’ve visited a lot of Legian restaurants in my day. I’ve also stayed in a lot of Legian hotels, like Jayakarta, Swiss-Belinn, Grandmas Plus Hotel and Bali Mandira (that’s all…). Legian is one of my favourite places in Bali (in case you couldn’t tell). It’s sandwiched between Kuta and Seminyak and offers the best of both worlds. It’s away from Kuta’s hectic hustle and bustle but is not as upscale as Seminyak. I wanted to put together a list of my favourite Legian restaurants, as there isn’t really something similar out there. So here’s a list of the best places to eat in Legian.

1. Sammy’s Bar and Restaurant

Sammy’s is one of my favourite Legian restaurants because of its excellent service. On arrival, you are given an ice-cold towel, which is heavenly in the wet season. Stick that baby on your neck and feel the instant relief. Each table also gets some peanuts to nibble on while deciding what to order. But wait, there’s more. Sammy’s also do a huge selection of 50,000 IRP cocktails, which are on par with their Aussie counterparts. Their nasi goreng includes chicken satay, and their peanut sauce was so good I still remember it. That pretty much means it’s the best peanut sauce in Bali 💁🏻‍♀️.

2. Fat Bowl Legian

This is the one Legian restaurant on this list I haven’t been to yet. However, after hearing rave reviews it sounds like one of the best places to eat in Legian so it snuck in. Fat Bowl serves a wide range of Asian specialties, like Peking roast duck, sushi doughnuts and bao buns. There’s also Western food available, including burgers and sliders.

3. Rama Garden Legian Restaurant

Thanks to our friends staying at this hotel, we had a memorable lunch at this particular Legian restaurant. Whenever I see nasi campur (pronounced champur) on the menu, I tend to order it. It’s a selection of different Indonesian specialties and I love just digging into each dish to see what it is. The only downside is that there’s usually one spicy dish, and I do not do spicy.

But back to Rama. Usually, the dish is just served on one plate like any other, but at this restaurant, they actually brought a massive tray out of the kitchen and placed it in front of me. I thought it was carrying everyone’s dishes, but no, just my lunch. I feasted on gado gado (salad with peanut sauce), crumbed prawns, beef rendang, egg and more. Obviously, I highly recommend this dish and restaurant. They have theatre seating to watch the footy on the big screen too.

I returned in 2019 and I have to say, Rama Garden is still firmly one of the best restaurants in Legian in my book. The staff are also very friendly, even when you’re dining solo.

4. Poco Loco

Poco Loco is an old favourite restaurant in Legian we’ve visited a few times because I’m obsessed with Mexican food. Perhaps the restaurant’s best feature though is its resident joker, who is always there to entertain diners. But this is one of the best places to eat in Legian if you want something different for dinner, as you will find the usual Mexican staples here. Think fajitas, chimichangas and tacos.

5. Kumala Pantai Ristorante Italia

Located on Legian Beach, Kumala Pantai was where we went for my birthday lunch. It’s one of my favourite Legian restaurants. I like their outdoor seating under the trees, but I love their nasi goreng. Their take on the traditional meal includes a prawn cracker as big as your hand and some delicious fried chicken. There are plenty of beachfront restaurants in Legian with ocean views, but Kumala Pantai is the best in my opinion. Plus, seeing as it’s an Italian restaurant, you will be pleased to know the pizzas are big and look delicious.

6. The Lokal 80361

This is a new addition to this list of the best places to eat in Legian. I liked it so much I returned twice in one week in 2019. It has a modern interior, with comfortable seating and plenty of TVs. There are a lot of seafood and meat dishes, but I personally recommend the burgers and sandwiches. It’s one of the best Legian restaurants to visit when you feel like a little bit of Western food.

7. Sendok Emas Restaurant

The new kid on the Legian block and one of the busiest Legian restaurants, my mum and I continuously walked past Sendok Emas, so decided to give it a go one lunchtime. It gets points for its beautiful interior, excellent staff and the fact it’s the first place I have ever seen Bintang on tap. We didn’t even think that was a thing. The restaurant also has a daily happy hour, which had pretty good 2 for 1 deals.

8. Legend’s Bar

We have been visiting Legend’s for years. It’s one of the most fun places to eat in Legian as it has a great live band and hosts the most hilarious variety night on the island. I’m talking the staff dress up as Elvis, drag queens and Michael Jackson. I even had one staff member slow dance with me one night and pose for a “prom photo” afterwards. It is the bar to visit in Legian when you want a fun night. Legend’s also do 2 for 1 cocktails, and have a Plucka Duck cocktail, which is basically a Long Island Iced Tea inside a duck. You’ve been warned.

9. Azul Beach Club

Another new addition to this extensive list of best restaurants in Legian, Azul Beach Club is next door to Bali Mandira, where I stayed in 2019. I got to visit Azul Beach Club on a few occasions, and there’s a reason it’s known as Legian’s best and biggest beach club/restaurant. Firstly, it’s located opposite Legian Beach and has the most beautiful interior. Then there’s the delicious food, creative cocktails and extremely friendly staff. Don’t miss Azul Beach Club’s Tipsy Tea either – it’s such a fun thing to do with friends or your mum when visiting Legian. So, if there’s one restaurant you visit in Legian, make sure it’s Azul Beach Club.

10. OUR’s Bar & Restaurant

This was one of the best Legian restaurants I discovered in 2019. I went back a couple of times because the Indonesian food was cheap and delicious. Seriously, the nasi goreng portion size was out of control (in the best way). They also serve pasta, pizza, sandwiches and other Indonesian specialties. OUR’s is also one of the best places to eat in Legian if you want to eat dinner with a side of sports. I visited on a quiet night and the staff were super friendly too. One even sat down and had a chat 😂. Highly recommend checking out OUR’s Bar & Restaurant in Legian.

11. Mozzarella

There are two Mozzarella restaurants in Legian. Its food is a little pricier (starting from about $10 AUD for a meal) but the presentation and taste are on par with any Australian restaurant. The menu includes Indonesian and Western dishes, and I went for something different in the beef shank with fettuccini. It was perfect, with the meat falling off the bone. A visit here gives you a reason to dress up just a tad. And by that, I mean flats instead of thongs (or flip flops for my North American readers).

12. Jerry’s Beach Bar

Oh, Jerry’s Beach Bar. I seriously look forward to watching the sunset over the water every day from Jerry’s. We have been going to the same Bali beach bar since we first started visiting Legian nearly a decade ago. The owner and a lot of the beach sellers have basically seen me grow up in my 20s, and they always remember my family. Jerry’s English is excellent and when he isn’t busy he loves to sit down and have a chat. Being on the beach, you will be constantly bombarded by sellers wanting you to buy their jewellery/get a tattoo/have a massage. Just get ready to say no thanks a few times. Jerry also sells Bintangs, soft drink and a pre-mixed vodka concoction.

You will find Jerry’s Beach Bar to your left when heading onto Legian Beach from the entrance directly in front of Jayakarta.

13. Bella Vista

Finally, for all those people who need a decent caffeine hit in the morning, check out Bella Vista. The coffee shop also does excellent smoothies, juices, and offers the all-important beer too. There’s an adjoining bakery, where we may have picked up a delicious slice of chocolate cake for my birthday in 2017. I also had a lemon, lime and bitters, and it was perfect. The staff were really friendly, so I think this may become a regular spot on future trips to Legian.

Legian isn’t a well-known area of Bali, but it really is a great place to stay, eat and drink. I will always return there, especially so I can visit all of these Legian restaurants again and again. Remember, before travelling internationally, you should definitely purchase travel insurance too. Bali belly is no joke (take it from the girl who gets it all.the.time). It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
