What To Do in Kuala Lumpur – 20+ Free & Fun Activities

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please read the full disclosure policy here.

Wondering what to do in Kuala Lumpur? You’re in the right place, as I break down the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

I like to think of Kuala Lumpur as Singapore’s cool little sibling—slightly in the shadow, but every bit as exciting (and I say that as a huge Singapore fan). I spent a month living in KL in 2023, eating my way through hawker stalls and exploring every corner. So I’ve got solid recommendations on what to eat and do. This guide is broken into sections, whether you’re looking for free things to do, nighttime fun, or the best local eats. Let’s dive in!

Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur

I highly recommend using Airbnb when searching for accommodation in Kuala Lumpur. I stayed in two different apartments, a one-bedroom and a studio, both within walking distance of Bukit Bintang. They were affordable for a solo female traveller, safe, comfortable, and had pools and a gym.

How to get around Kuala Lumpur

I did a lot of walking in Kuala Lumpur, but getting around doesn’t have to mean sore feet. The city offers several public transport options, including buses, light rail, MRT, commuter rail, and even a monorail. You can grab single tickets at station machines or make life easier with a reloadable Touch ’n Go card.

Free things to do in Kuala Lumpur

Here are several fun things to do in KL that won’t cost you a cent.

Petronas Twin Towers from KLCC Park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (what to do in Kuala Lumpur)

1. See the Petronas Towers from KLCC Park

It’ll cost you to go inside the world’s tallest twin towers. But soaking up the view from KLCC Park? Totally free. Do as the locals do and exercise on the jogging paths, snap that iconic Petronas shot from one of the many prime angles (lakes and fountains included), and enjoy the buzz of the city without spending a cent. Happy exploring (and snapping)!

Standing in front of colourful steps at Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Golden statue and view from Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

2. Visit Batu Caves

Batu Caves may cost you some leg power, but not a cent to enter—this iconic KL spot is totally free! The climb is real, but between the 272 rainbow-coloured steps, massive limestone cave temple, and rich Hindu culture, it’s absolutely worth the sweat. I was genuinely spellbound from the moment I saw Lord Murugan’s (the Hindu god of war) golden statue towering over the entrance.

A few tips:
– There is a train station nearby, but services can be infrequent. I got a Grab car there and the train back.
– Trust the hype and get there early. It’s cooler, quieter, and way less crowded first thing in the morning.
– Dress respectfully. It’s a major Hindu pilgrimage site, so cover your shoulders and knees.

Exploring Perdana Botanical Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

3. Visit Perdana Botanical Gardens

Perdana Botanical Garden (also known as Taman Botani Perdana) has it all: Real deer roaming the Deer Park, a Sunken Garden straight out of Bridgerton, the jaw-dropping Laman Perdana structure, plus the vibrant Orchid and Hibiscus Gardens. You can also check out paid spots like KL Butterfly Park and Planetarium Negara. But honestly, it’s the perfect place to start your day with a free, peaceful stroll and your favourite audiobook.

Views in Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

4. Explore Chinatown

One of the top places to go in KL, there are so many amazing free things to see and do around Chinatown:

  • Dive into Petaling Street Market (Jalan Petaling) from 10 am to 10 pm for clothes, accessories, and mouthwatering street food.
  • Stop and stare at the vibrant Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and eye-catching street art nearby.
  • Hunt down local flavours and unique finds inside Central Market. It’s not free, but I bought too many souvenirs from Paper Adventure.
  • Walk along the River of Life to the stunning Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque.
  • Snap epic photos from the Masjid Jamek Pedestrian Bridge en route to the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
  • Soak up history at Merdeka Square, a.k.a. Independence Square
  • Strike a pose with the famous I Love KL statue.

5. Visit the Thean Hou Temple

Thean Hou Temple is one of Southeast Asia’s oldest and largest Buddhist temples, and an absolute showstopper. Dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu, it’s all towering tiers, glowing lanterns, and gold-drenched statues. No surprise it’s an Instagram hotspot. The best part? The top attraction in KL is free to visit if you want to see what the hype’s about.

Colourful Little India Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

6. Explore Little India

After Batu Caves, I made my way to KL Sentral and wandered through Little India Brickfields. Think bold colours, buzzing clothing stalls, and festive decorations at every turn. It’s a totally different side of KL, and absolutely worth a stroll to soak it all in.

Street art in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

7. Spot street art

Hi, my name is Hayley and I’m a sucker for street art! Explore this Kuala Lumpur street art map and enjoy discovering both historic and vibrant local art (Bukit Bintang is my top pick).

Things to do in Kuala Lumpur

Okay, now we’ve got cool things to do in KL that’ll cost you.

Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

8. Visit the Petronas Twin Towers

Want to step inside the iconic Petronas Twin Towers? I skipped it to save some ringgit. But if you’re keen, book your tickets in advance. You’ll glide up in a high-speed, sci-fi-worthy elevator straight to the Observation Deck on level 86. From there, soak in sweeping views of Kuala Lumpur, then swing by the Skybridge on levels 41 and 42. Don’t forget to grab a souvenir on your way out because pics aren’t the only thing worth taking home.

9. Take the kids to Aquaria KLCC

While you’re in the area, stop by Aquaria KLCC, one of Asia’s top-rated aquariums and a hit with kids. Home to over 150 aquatic species, it features a 90-metre underwater tunnel and a Touch Zone where little ones can get hands-on. It’s one of the best family-friendly activities in KL. Pro tip: Book your tickets online in advance for a better deal.

Lalaport, one of the many malls in Kuala Lumpur.

10. Shop until you drop

Much like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur is packed with 60+ glorious, air-conditioned malls, and I made the most of them. Around Bukit Bintang, I hit up mall after mall for fashion finds, foodie fixes, and plenty of entertainment. I recommend making a beeline for Pavilion, home to over 700 stores! KL malls are cool, comfy, and full of surprises (ahem, please see below).

Berjaya Times Square Theme Park

11. Have fun at Berjaya Times Square Theme Park

Tick “giant indoor theme park” off your bucket list in KL thanks to Berjaya Times Square Theme Park. I didn’t hop on the rides, but standing under a roller coaster as it roars overhead? Still a thrill. There’s something for everyone, including rides, carnival games, arcades, and even a year-round Snow Town. It’s an ideal rainy-day activity in KL or when the humidity hits the next level.

KL Tower and city skyline view from apartment.
KL Tower from my Airbnb (seriously).

12. Visit Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower)

Want killer KL views with the Petronas Twin Towers in the frame? Head to Menara Kuala Lumpur, a.k.a. the KL Tower. At 300 metres up, the Sky Deck delivers jaw-dropping panoramas, and if you’re feeling brave, step onto the glass-bottomed Sky Box. There’s also the Observation Deck, the Tower Walk, and a mix of ticket options (go à la carte or bundle it up). Bonus: it’s way more budget-friendly than the Petronas Towers. And if you’re hungry for more? Dine sky-high at ARAS, Malaysia’s highest revolving restaurant.

13. Visit the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

One look at the stunning exterior and you know the Islamic Arts Museum is something special. Inside, expect beautifully curated Islamic artifacts and rich history, showcased with serious style.

14. Walk through the rainforest at KL Eco Forest Park

Formerly known as Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, this patch of rainforest right in the heart of the city is one of Malaysia’s oldest conservation areas. The highlight is the canopy walk, an elevated trail that lets you stroll above the treetops with glimpses of KL Tower peeking through the foliage. It’s peaceful, green, and a total contrast to the surrounding urban chaos. Bonus: There are several hiking trails for those keen to explore deeper.

Cable car in Genting Highlands

15. Do a day trip to Genting Highlands

If you’ve got time, one of the top places to visit from Kuala Lumpur is Genting Highlands. Just under an hour away and perched 6,000 feet above sea level. Think cooler temps, sprawling shopping malls, casinos, and the Skyworlds Theme Park. It gave me serious Niagara Falls energy (minus the waterfalls). Don’t skip the Genting Skyway, Southeast Asia’s fastest and longest cable car, with sweeping views along the ride. Book an organised day tour and you can also visit Chin Swee Caves Temple and cross Batu Caves off your list all in one go.

Things to do in Kuala Lumpur at night

What to do in Kuala Lumpur at night? I’ve got you.

Lake Symphony Water Show at KLCC Park.

16. Symphony Lake Water Show

Okay, I’ll admit it—Singapore wins the synchronised water show award. But if you’re in KL with kids, visiting Lake Symphony is one of the best free things to do after dark. Set in KLCC Park, this 10,000 sq ft man-made lake comes alive with the KLCC Lake Symphony Light and Sound Show—right outside Suria KLCC, beneath the glowing Petronas Twin Towers.

Expect two dazzling musical fountains and over 150 unique animations lighting up the night. Full shows run at 8, 9, and 10 pm daily, with lights-only versions at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 pm. Bring snacks, find a spot on the Esplanade, and enjoy the magic for zero ringgit.

Red lanterns hanging on Jalan Alor Food Street in Kuala Lumpur.

17. Feast on Jalan Alor Food Street

My favourite place to visit in Kuala Lumpur is Jalan Alor. KL’s buzzing food hub really comes alive after dark. The street shuts to traffic, turning into a foodie paradise packed with sizzling stalls and lively restaurants. Whichever Malaysian delicacy you crave, you’ll find it here.

18. Visit Saloma Bridge

KL really knows how to light things up. Another must-see? The Saloma Link Bridge is a bold, futuristic pedestrian bridge that glows in vibrant colours after dark. It’s a photo op waiting to happen.

River of Life in Kuala Lumpur during the day.

19. Visit the River of Life

I mentioned it earlier, but the River of Life truly shines at night. Set where the Klang and Gombak Rivers meet, this award-winning restoration has been named one of the world’s top 10 most beautiful waterfronts. After dark, it transforms, with the water glowing electric blue, pulsing to music in a stunning light display. Don’t miss the “Dancing Symphony Fountain” (also known as the Blue Pool), with shows at 8, 9, and 10 pm. It’s KL magic, completely free.

20. Have a drink at Heli Lounge Bar

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Kuala Lumpur, let me introduce you to Heli Lounge Bar. I didn’t even know it existed until after my KL trip, and I’m still mad about it. It’s an actual, functioning helipad by day and a rooftop bar by night, with unbeatable 360° views of the city. Sip a cocktail while the sun sets behind the skyline. Please go here for me!

21. Have fun at Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

Sunway Lagoon is just 15 minutes from KL and delivers thrills day and night. Hit the theme and water park by day, then come back after dark for the Night Park. Captain Quack Land keeps the fun going with rides open until 11 pm, and the Wildlife Park transforms into a Night Zoo for a wild after-hours adventure. It’s one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur at night with kids! Click here for a discounted ticket.

Changkat Avenue in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, during the day.
The daytime view

22. Take a stroll down Changkat Avenue

Changkat Avenue is Bukit Bintang’s bar street, coming alive after 6 pm. It’s particularly popular with Western tourists and expats, but you can find everything from an American diner to tapas to Mexican cuisine to enjoy with your cocktail or local beer.

The best food in Kuala Lumpur

I actually have a comprehensive Kuala Lumpur food guide. It’s broken into sections, but here’s a brief recap:

  • Where to eat in Bukit Bintang: Jalan Alor Food Street, Damascus for Syrian shawarma, brunch at Feeka Coffee Roasters, the best nasi lemak in Malaysia at Capitol Cafe, char kuey teow from Lot 10 Hutong Food Court, and dessert from Molten Chocolate Cafe.
  • The best food with a view in KL: Envi Skydining near the Petronas Towers. Head here for the lunch specials, and thank me later.
  • Where to eat in Chinatown: brunch at Merchant’s Lane, the lunch special at LOKL Coffee Co., dessert from Bubble Bee Cafe, and the food court at Central Market.
I hope this guide on what to do in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, helps you plan your trip to the underrated southeast asian city.

There are so many things to do in Kuala Lumpur, whether you’re visiting on a layover or for a month like me! If you need help packing for your trip to KL, check out my Southeast Asia packing list. Keep reading as I answer all your FAQs!

FAQs – general KL questions

Is Kuala Lumpur worth visiting?

Yes, I highly recommend visiting Kuala Lumpur. It’s packed with attractions, lush parks, and family-friendly fun. Plus, the food is both incredible and incredibly cheap. You definitely won’t be bored (or hungry).

Is it safe to walk around Kuala Lumpur at night?

As a solo female traveller, I felt safe exploring Kuala Lumpur. The streets around Bukit Bintang were well-lit at night, and KLCC Park during the evening water show was lively, family-friendly, and well-patrolled. Like any big city, stay aware. But overall, I had no issues.

Is Kuala Lumpur expensive?

As a tourist, I found Kuala Lumpur to be one of the most budget-friendly cities in Southeast Asia. There’s no shortage of free attractions, and the street food is both delicious and ridiculously cheap. Your money goes a long way here.

Is Kuala Lumpur a walkable city?

As mentioned, I pounded the pavement in Kuala Lumpur. Thankfully, it’s pretty walkable around areas like Bukit Bintang and Chinatown. That said, the heat is real. Luckily, KL’s public transport is fast, affordable, and super easy to navigate when you’re ready to give your feet a break.

What is Kuala Lumpur known for?

Kuala Lumpur is best known as Malaysia’s capital and largest city. But it’s also a vibrant cultural melting pot. Like Singapore, it’s home to Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities, each adding their own flavour to the city. Must-see attractions include the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the colourful Batu Caves, and the towering Menara KL.
