Hayley Lately // April 2019

Welcome back to Hayley Lately. Each month, this is where I chat about my life and what I’ve been up to in Melbourne. Keep reading to discover the book I couldn’t put down, my new favourite show and the best Melbourne eats.

LIFE LATELY

April has definitely been a fun and busy month around here, as I’ve been juggling all the jobs. However, I still found time to venture out with friends in Melbourne to eat ALL the things (more on that below). I spent my Easter working every day, including Good Friday. But my holiday began last Tuesday when I returned home to Townsville for a week. I also went to Specsavers for my annual eye exam and got myself a new pair of specs, as well as new sunglasses. I’m slightly in love.

This lovely little blog of mine also got nominated for a travel blog award. It will take you less than 30 seconds to go to this website and click to nominate Hayley on Holiday. I’d really appreciate the support!

READING LATELY

I thought March was a good reading month, but April was also filled with excellent reads. I started with Inheritance, which is an interesting memoir by an author who discovers her father wasn’t in fact her biological father. Then there was The Lost Vintage, which is predominantly set in France and includes World War II flashbacks. It’s an interesting storyline that features romance, wine and family – what more could you want, right? Next was the highly anticipated Daisy Jones and The Six (Amazon says it’s 2019’s first pop culture sensation). I started reading this interview-based book and then my friend told me it was completely fictional. I was both surprised and embarrassed 😳 I think it lived up to the hype.

Book number four for the month also has rave reviews: Where the Crawdads Sing. It took me awhile to get through this book, about a girl in the 1960s left to fend for herself in the marshes of North Carolina. It was good, but not mind blowing. The last book for April was Maybe Someday, which I read too quickly. It’s a very cute romance novel. I also signed up with NetGalley this month, where you can receive advanced copies of books to review on your blog or Goodreads profile (or both, which is me). I’ve got quite a few romance novels to dig into now on my Kindle and I can’t wait!

BLOGGING LATELY

I didn’t post as much on the blog as I would have liked this month. But I did get two posts published: my guide on where to visit in Australia alone and all the best places to eat in Auckland.

EATING LATELY

I definitely did some eating in April. To start, my friends and I went to ShanDong MaMa for dumplings one evening after work. They’re quick, delicious and relatively cheap. We followed this (naturally) with ice cream from Pidapipo. A few nights later I met up with another work friend for Vietnamese at Pho Dzung City Noodle Shop. There are just an endless amount of food options in Melbourne’s CBD!

We went back to trivia at The Wharf Hotel twice in April as well. It’s not only a fun night, but a cheap one as well – hello $10 pizzas and $6 happy hour schooners. What more could you want? Another workmate organised after work drinks on Easter Monday. Fortunately Fitzroy Social was doing happy hour all night. It’s a great space in Melbourne for big groups.

WATCHING LATELY

I’m definitely here for all the original movies Netflix has released recently. Firstly there was Rebel Wilson’s Isn’t It Romantic?, which won bonus points with me because she did karaoke to my favourite Whitney Houston song. Then there was The Perfect Date, followed by Someone Great. The latter is definitely a fun movie to watch with friends. I’m also happy that The Bold Type is back for a third season. I highly recommend watching this series. The main three actresses are fantastic together and they talk about all kinds of issues young women face today.

That’s a wrap on April. I don’t have anything exciting planned in May except for work, work, work. But hopefully I find time for some fun as well ;)
