Where is Home?

Being a traveller, and an expat, it is undeniable that you will be asked hundred-and-one times where you are from. Working on a food truck selling Australian food in Vancouver also doubles the amount. But for me, it is difficult to answer this question. Is home where I was born? Grew up? Lived before I moved to Vancouver? Perth – Townsville – Brisbane. Which to choose. Where is home?

Home to me is where my beautiful parents are. Where I escaped to from the city life in Brisbane. Where I can be at the beach in ten minutes, sinking my toes into the soft sand and watching the sky turn pink, purple, orange and gold as the sun descends on another day. Where I can contently spend my days swimming, reading and relaxing.

Home is knowing my way around the city. Driving passed my school and university and reminiscing. Walking on The Strand. Having favourite shops, cafes and bars. Being proud of watching it grow into a more cultural, diverse city. Where my sports team resides.

Home is the beautiful winter days and the summers you detest; not wanting to step outside your air-conditioned igloo for dreading the feeling of melting like ice cream and your skin burning like fire once you leave.

It is knowing that Townsville and Magnetic Island will always be home and there for me when I need it most. When I need a hug from my family and the city that gets me; familiarity; a feeling of belonging. That no matter where in the world my heart and feet lead me to next, I can always return to my safety net: home.
